Teaching and Learning Policies

Sacred Heart Catholic Primary exists to bring children to a greater love and knowledge of God. This fundamental belief permeates the whole curriculum. Curriculum means all those activities that are designed to promote the spiritual, moral, cultural, academic and physical development of pupils whatever their starting points.  Developing independence, motivation and a sense of responsibility as future citizens is at the heart of all our teaching and learning.

The main principles underlying all curriculum policies in Sacred Heart School are entitlement, inclusion and raising achievement.

The curriculum defines and describes the full range of experiences that Sacred Heart School plans and delivers for its pupils in preparing them for the opportunities and demands of adult life. It has clear aims and is grounded upon a clear vision and set of values and aptitudes that influence the activities and quality of relationships within the school.   It is designed to inspire all pupils regardless of race, language or religion.  Sacred Heart School curriculum includes the Early Years Foundation Stage, the National Curriculum, the Come and See scheme for Religious Education and any other statutory requirements or recommendations.

The curriculum is designed to engage pupils in learning about: the world around them, the history and geography of their local area, key national and international events, the history and geography of Britain and other parts of the world, natural disasters and the science that underpins what they experience in the world around them and in their investigation and learning in other areas of the curriculum.  Books and reading form an important basis on which our curriculum is based.  We promote a love of books and reading.

Theme days, whole school activities and opportunities within and outside school, all enrich and develop learning.

Pupils have the opportunity to share their learning with each other, their parents and carers and other learners through school based exhibitions, sharing lessons with their parents, performances and events or competitions involving other schools.
